SPRING TEEBALL/BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

Can my child be assigned to a particular team, and/or the same team as a friend?
In the Tee Ball League, we attempt to honor requests for team assignment or assignment with a friend, but we have to place a higher priority on balancing not only the total number of players on each team, but also the number of players of each age on each team. The large majority of assignment requests in Tee Ball are honored.

Unfortunately, in leagues other than Tee Ball, requests to be assigned to a particular team or to be assigned together with a friend are not honored. In order to ensure fairness to all teams, these leagues must follow very rigid player assignment procedures and special requests are not considered regardless of the reason for the request. Siblings will automatically be assigned to the same team unless requested otherwise.

If, however, there is one team or coach that you wish to avoid, this request will be honored if noted at the time of registration or before team assignments are made.

Can my child be automatically assigned to a particular team if I agree to sponsor that team?
We are very grateful to our team sponsors, but you cannot pick a team for your child simply by agreeing to be the team sponsor. If you agree to be a sponsor, however, we will ensure that your sponsorship is used for the team to which your child is assigned under our normal team assignment procedures.

Can my child be assigned to a younger age group due to inexperience, lack of skill, size, or minor disability?
Sorry, no. Exceptions for allowing a child to play in an age group lower than his/her actual age (as determined by the appropriate age determination date) are only considered for those with a significant physical or mental disability. Simply being inexperienced, unskilled, small in size, shy, A.D.D. or other minor disabilities are not considered as possible exceptions for allowing a child to play in a younger group.

Can my child be assigned to an older age group due to advanced skill level?
Although we believe the large majority of even highly skilled athletes are better off playing in their normal age group, we realize there are a few for which exceptions are appropriate. A player is allowed to play one year “up” provided the request is made at the time of registration.

What do I need to do if I want to be a coach?
There is always a need for some new head coaches (managers) each year, so be sure to check the box on your child’s registration form if you’re interested in being a team manager. Each League Chairman is responsible for selecting the team managers. If you’re not selected as a manager, there probably still will be an opportunity to be an assistant coach.

What equipment/uniform items will I need to get for my child?
  • Each player will need his/her own glove.
  • Most players above the Tee Ball level wear cleats, but they are not required. If your child has cleats from another sport (e.g., soccer), they should be fine.
  • Many players like to use their own bats, but the league furnishes bats to teams for players who do not have their own. If you plan to purchase a bat for your child, you may want to talk first to your child’s coach for guidance in selecting an appropriate size, weight, and model.
  • Batting helmets are normally not used at the Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch levels. Batting helmets are required at all older levels, and a small assortment of sizes is furnished to each team for use by players who do not have their own. If you prefer that your child use his/her own batting helmet, please be aware that girls’ softball rules require that the helmet have a face mask and chin strap; the face mask and chin strap are not required for the baseball leagues.
  • It’s recommended that boys wear a protective supporter and cup, especially for catchers.
  • Tee Ball and all Baseball leagues are furnished with caps and shirts. Pants and socks will need to be purchased, but you should wait until you talk to your child’s coach to see what color he wants the players to have.
  • Girls’ Softball leagues are furnished with shirts and socks. Some coaches may want the players to also purchase some color-coordinated shorts or pants, but you should wait until you talk to your child’s coach.
Will my child need to attend tryouts?
We don’t have tryouts for any of our leagues. Returning players within a league are automatically assigned to their previous year’s team unless they request to be placed back into the player pool. Siblings of returning players are also automatically assigned. The child of a team manager is assigned to the team, along with the child of the designated assistant coach. All other new players within a league are assigned through a blind draw that is structured to balance the age distribution and, in older leagues, to also balance the distribution of the more highly skilled players.

EXCEPTIONS: In Tee Ball, all players are assigned to teams in an effort to honor requests as long as a reasonable balance of ages is maintained. Girls’ Senior Softball, and Women’s Open Softball also have provisions for other automatic assignments.

After signing up, when should I expect to hear from my child’s coach?
League organizational meetings with the team managers will be conducted in late March, so you should receive a call from the coach at the end of March or in early April (right after Spring Break).

When will practices begin, how often and when will they take place?
Some teams may have their first practice in late March. Many others may wait until after Spring Break before trying to get started. If your child’s team is planning to practice during Spring Break and you have plans to be out of town, don’t be concerned – this is very common and your child will not be penalized in any way for absences during Spring Break.
  • Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch teams typically practice once or twice each week during the preseason period. If a practice is scheduled during the week, the starting time is usually 6:00 p.m. or later, although some teams may start a weekday practice as early as 5:30.Saturday practices could be at any time during the day and Sunday practices could be at any time beginning in early afternoon.Practices usually last for about one hour.
  • Machine-pitch and older teams usually practice twice each week during the preseason, usually once on a weeknight evening and once during the weekend.Practices usually last about 1 ½ hours.
After the games begin, teams normally do not practice more than once each week, and some teams may not practice each week during the season.

When will the games begin and when are they played?

  • Tee Ball teams will each be scheduled to play 9 or 10 games over eight weeks. Most games are scheduled on Monday and Wednesday evenings, although, depending on the number of teams, there could be a few games scheduled on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. We try to balance the schedule so that each team has roughly the same number of games on the different days. Makeup games are usually scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays. Starting times for weekday games are 6:00 and 7:15. Coaches usually like for the players to show up ½ hour before each game. Games last for approximately 1 hour. There is no post-season tournament for Tee Ball, so the season will end in late June.
  • Coach-Pitch teams are scheduled to play 10 games over eight weeks, plus a post-season tournament that includes all the teams. Boys’ games are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with the girls’ games being played on Wednesdays and Fridays. Weekday games start at 6:00 and 7:15, and last about an hour. Coaches usually like for the players to show up ½ hour before each game. Tournament games may be scheduled on any day of the week. Most teams will probably be eliminated from the tournament before July 4, but the tournament will not be completed until shortly after the Fourth of July weekend.
  • Machine-Pitch teams are scheduled to play twice each week for eight weeks, plus a post-season tournament. Games within these leagues are normally all scheduled from Monday-Friday. There is no pattern of certain days a team is scheduled, so a team may have its games on Monday and Wednesday one week, Tuesday and Friday the next, and so on. Makeup games are normally scheduled for weekend times. Weekday games have starting times of 6:00, 7:15, or 8:30 (8:30 games are not scheduled on Jefferson County Public School nights), and usually last a little more than an hour. Coaches usually like the players to show up ½ hour before each game. What about family vacations or other conflicting activities?
If your only conflict is a one or two-week family vacation during the course of the season, you don’t need to be concerned. This is not uncommon, but please make sure the coach has as much advance notice as possible.

Many children are involved in multiple activities, and it’s unusual for any child to be able to attend every practice and game during the season. If, however, you don’t think your child will be able to attend at least the large majority of the time (both practices and games), it may be best to not sign up. Like so many other things, what you get out of it is largely a product of what you put into it, and it can be unfair to both the child and the team if a player is absent too frequently.

Most importantly, please make sure you inform the coach as soon as possible regarding any functions your child will not be able to attend.

What are practices like?

After that, the rest of the practices will be in full gear.  It is the family's responsibility to bring all gear to full contact practices, player's will not be allowed to borrow gear from the office.

Is there anything else to bring to practice?
Each player should bring a one-gallon jug of water to practice. Jugs should be personalized with the player's name.
